I think the Skate monastery makes one.Isabellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18252690723338025605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27163563.post-35838804319021833572013-12-31T16:55:29.383-06:002013-12-31T16:55:29.383-06:00In September, I noticed "Marabissi Panforte D...In September, I noticed "Marabissi Panforte Di Siena Margherita" on Amazon, thinking it would be a fruitcake-like thing my wife would like. It's really not -- candied fruit and almonds. Not great.

But speaking of making fruitcake, I just caught an episode of Mo Rocca's Cooking Network show that showed a Jamaican Black Cake being made by Vanetta Willams (lately of the Bronx). Looks a lot like a fruitcake, to me. Here is the web reference: http://www.cookingchanneltv.com/recipes/jamaican-black-cake.html .

And you being in NYC, you should be able to find a black cake ready-made. See this entertaining NY Times article by Julia Moskin, http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/19/dining/19cake.html?_r=0, who writes "Because of the soaking of the fruit and the use of brown sugar and a bittersweet caramel called browning, black cake is to American fruitcake as dark chocolate is to milk chocolate: darker, deeper and altogether more absorbing."Gregory Leehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11293280236115306205noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27163563.post-90095181800467743522013-12-22T08:51:51.513-06:002013-12-22T08:51:51.513-06:00Hi Anonymous, good idea, I think I will get more i...Hi Anonymous, good idea, I think I will get more into making them, and I've heard that one's a good (though expensive) one to make!Isabellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18252690723338025605noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-27163563.post-82715298538367848262013-12-21T19:15:43.335-06:002013-12-21T19:15:43.335-06:00Isabelle, since you are venturing into the actual ...Isabelle, since you are venturing into the actual craft of fruitcake making, have you considered Alton Brown's "Free-Range Fruitcake"? Here is a link to the Food Network recipe, which includes a predictably entertaining video: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/free-range-fruitcake-recipe/index.html
Some of us cannot bake, but since you can, why don't you try this one and report?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
